The Philosophy

Argiano, one of the oldest wineries in Montalcino, has embraced an innovative and forward-thinking approach while remaining deeply rooted in its history and location. Its philosophy is a journey through time: like Janus, the Roman god with two faces—one looking to the past and the other to the future—Argiano values its centuries-old heritage while designing a future grounded in sustainability, biodiversity, and respect for the vineyard.

THE SOIL

At the heart of Argiano’s agricultural philosophy lies a profound respect for its soils, regarded as a complex, living system that holds the secrets of the earth’s origins within its layers. Unlocking these secrets enables the enhancement of the soil’s unique characteristics while addressing the challenges posed by climate change and modern agriculture.

MICROZONATION

Central to this vision is microzonation, an in-depth study of the estate’s soils that identifies its most exceptional plots. Marl—a sedimentary rock made of oceanic clays and marine fossils—reveals the land’s ancient past, when it was submerged beneath water. This insight led to the creation of Argiano’s first cru, the Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Suolo, and an experimental vineyard dedicated to innovation.

This experimental vineyard, planted with selections from Vigna del Suolo, aims to identify the best Sangiovese clones—those that are most expressive, resilient, and emblematic of the Tuscan land they have flourished in for centuries.

ORGANIC-REGENERATIVE VITICULTURE

Argiano’s approach to organic farming extends into organic-regenerative viticulture, where the vineyard is nurtured back to its natural equilibrium while supporting biodiversity. Agricultural practices like green manure sowing, the introduction of beneficial insects, and the use of microorganisms such as mycorrhiza exemplify this method. These techniques create a balanced environment that enhances biodiversity and fosters a thriving ecosystem.

BIODIVERSITY

For Argiano, biodiversity represents harmony. A balanced vineyard ecosystem strengthens the vines, optimizing the use of natural resources and improving resilience. This balance, in turn, is reflected in Argiano’s wines, which showcase the excellence of a terroir devoted to Sangiovese.

In the cellar, this agricultural philosophy transforms into a minimal-intervention winemaking approach. Grapes are handled with precision and care, ensuring the purity of the vine is respected. Each soil type and vineyard plot is allowed to express its unique story, resulting in wines that reflect their origins.

Argiano’s dedication to sustainability is evident in its various initiatives:

  • Argiano is completely plastic-free and committed to eliminating single-use plastics, embracing the principles of a circular economy.
  • To protect its local ecosystem, Argiano has achieved carbon neutrality.
  • Argiano has prepared a detailed Sustainability Report that evaluates its environmental, social, and governance performance. This comprehensive analysis underscores its commitment to sustainable development and highlights the dedication of everyone who is proudly involved in this ongoing journey.

“The rebirth of Argiano fills me (us) with great emotion and pride.

Achieving the sustainability certification marks an important milestone in the company’s renaissance.

The wine world needed a new fairytale: a 16th-century villa restored to its original splendor, a prestigious past intertwined with Italian art and culture, and a new horizon filled with hope and beginnings.

Thanks to the commitment, talent, and wisdom of our entire team, that fairytale is now Argiano.”
